Can Those With Allergies or Allergic Predispositions Get The COVID-19 Vaccine? 9/17/2021

Stating that we should reconsider our prejudices against vaccines, Dr. Hamza Ogun expressed, “When all vaccinations are taken into account, the rate of serious allergic reactions is less than 1/50,000. In a study conducted with family physicians in our country, the effect of the vaccine was observed in children who were referred to the hospital due to a history of allergy, but no serious reactions were encountered. Therefore, when we consider this issue specifically for Covid-19; vaccination is more important for a disease with a lethality of around 2-3 percent.

Bezmialem Vakıf University Hospital Chest Diseases Specialist Dr. Hamza Ogun stated, “Like many previous viral and bacterial infections, vaccination for Covid-19 infection is an important step in ending the pandemic. There are concerns in the community that allergic reactions to the vaccine may occur. Among the vaccine contents there are virus-specific antigens, potentiators and stabilizers to prevent damage to the vaccine during the transport process . Mild side effects such as mild fever, redness and pain in the injected area are observed after some vaccine administrations, but local and mild treatments are applied for these. Considering all vaccinations, the rate of serious allergic reactions is less than 1/50,000. In a study conducted in our country, no serious reactions to vaccines were observed in children who were referred to the hospital due to a history of allergy from family physicians. When we think about Covid-19, the importance of vaccination is more important for a disease with a lethality of 2-3 percent.

If we consider the possibility of developing the same or even more serious allergic reactions even to the prescriptions written to us by our doctors for our other complaints, we may need to reconsider our prejudices against vaccines.

Evaluating the results of the vaccine in terms of allergic reactions, Dr. Hamza Ogun concluded, “The inactivated vaccine of the Chinese originated Sinovac company, which started vaccine studies early, has been ordered for widespread use in our country. Having completed the Phase 1 and Phase 2 studies as of May 2020, the company published its results in an international journal. In this study, a total of 743 people were vaccinated and 1 person had an allergic urticaria reaction. It was observed that the patient's complaints regressed after 3 days of cortisone treatment. In summary; If we have not experienced a serious allergic reaction with any vaccine before, it is recommended to have the vaccine available in our country.
